Beyond the Score: Integrating Improvisation into Wind Band Training

Wind band musicians are often trained to execute notation with precision, yet many have limited opportunities to develop flexibility, listening awareness and a strong sense of musical voice.

This session explores how improvisation can be introduced in a practical and accessible way within the wind band setting. Drawing from both classical and jazz traditions, it presents simple frameworks such as call-and-response, modal improvisation and groove-based exercises that can be applied directly in rehearsals.

Through live demonstrations and interactive participation, attendees will gain practical tools to help students move beyond notation and engage more deeply with phrasing, time feel and ensemble communication. The session aims to support educators in cultivating more responsive, expressive and musically independent ensembles.
